Crew Member with Machine Gun, ca. 1943

A crew member of the CGR 3091 mans a deck-mounted machine gun and aims it across the water. No picket patrol boats ever saw combat during the Second World War. It is difficult to tell whether the crewman is simply posing or actually intending to fire; the lax crewmen around him who appear detached but interested suggests it may be a training exercise or demonstration.

Victor Romagna stands in the cockpit of the Serva La Bari. Romagna earned a Medal of Bravery for his lifesaving actions during the Normandy invasion, and later became one of the most famous sailors in the America’s Cup tournament.
