This charming winter scene depicts Rouse’s Deli, a small local grocer in Greenport that closed in the 1990’s. The building, which dates to the 1930’s, was once a bakery and has been transformed into a family home.

Pulling what is likely a refrigerator trailer, the gleaming surfaces and posed appearance of the truck suggest that the Pells were proud of their expensive work vehicles. Other photographs in the collection like it — including scenes where owners and workers pose in front of or with the trucks — are also suggestive of this.
