As the sleepy town of Greenport comes alive
this spring, a new look is waiting to be exposed at the East End
Seaport and Maritime Museum, located at the base of Third Street. The
innovative look encompasses the “Hoist the Main” Theme for the museum
this year. New
exhibits have been professionally designed by a well known experienced
graphic designer, Michael Eagle, creating an exciting treat for all
ages. In addition to the museum tour, visitors are welcome to come
taste the passion of sailing on board the “Mary E” - a 1906 historic
75’ sailing schooner. Join us for a sail around Greenport Harbor!
Additions and
modifications to the Museum include:
• Professional exhibits
secured from a Mystic Seaport Museum.
• A professionally designed
wind exhibit to demonstrate hands on sailing principles and techniques.
(Great for demonstrating the physics of sailing to both young and old)
•
An exhibit of model historic sailboats which sailed in local waters.
• A photo exhibit of key local yachtsmen. • An exhibit of
artifacts from the Greenport firm of Wm. J. Mills and Company,
one of the oldest sail making companies on Long Island. • In
association with the Shelter Island Yacht and the Orient Yacht Club,
East End Seaport Museum & Marine Foundation (EESMMF) will offer
four scholarships to local kids to participate in 2007 summer sailing
programs to be selected on the basis of a best essay. Funding for these
scholarships is being provided by Wm. J. Mills Co., Hudson City Savings
Bank, and the EESMMF. • Lectures from key sailors and others
involved in the business of sailing.
The Grand Opening
of the Museum will be May 19th. And don't forget
the world famous Greenport Maritime Festival September 22nd &
23rd including Pirates, games, vendors, Arts & crafts, boat
demonstrations & races, live music and much more!
