September
18 through the 20th, 2009, the
Foundation's annual Maritime Festival in Historic Greenport kicked off with
a Land and Sea Cocktail reception on Friday evening, September 18th and continued
throughout Saturday and Sunday September 19 and 20, with events that include
a kayak derby, whale boat race, the famous Clam Chowder contest, and music
from different bands.
Each year the
festival draws about 20,000 people and the crowd enjoys a variety of
family activities in Mitchell Park including Captain Kidd s Alley, Old
Fashioned Children's Games, Snapper Fishing Contest, Traditional Art
& Craft Demonstrations, the Greenport Pirates, and the Carousel.
Throughout
the village there are a variety of craft and food vendors, local
merchants have exciting displays and sales and the Village of Greenport
offers a wide array of galleries, antique stores and restaurants to
enjoy.
Volunteers and the East End
Seaport Museum & Marine Foundation organize the Festival with
support from the Village of Greenport, local merchants, corporate
sponsors and the local community.
This is a special opportunity for locals and visitors to the East
End/Greenport to learn about the East End s Maritime heritage and
contribute toward its preservation; participate in educational and fun
activities; explore the Village of Greenport s stores and attractions;
visit the Village s revitalized waterfront and have a fun day out with
the family.
