The Maritime Museum is located in the the old train station at 3rd St., adjacent to the Shelter Island North Ferry Dock. Inside, the museum boasts an array of exhibits on the maritime heritage of the area, including displays on the menhaden fishing industry, the oyster industry, lighthouse lenses, a model ships of the USS Ohio, and more. Among the more popular exhibits at the museum are the Fresnel lenses. The Second Order Fresnel lens is shown on the right. Second Order lenses, especially in this condition, are uncommon. In the photo you can see that this was a fixed, as opposed to rotating, light. The middle of the lens is a band that emits a solid sheet of light, rather than a bulls eye which would emit a flash from a rotating optic. The lens served at the Little Gull Island lighthouse from 1869 until 1995.
The Fourth Order lens, at left, was originally installed at the Plum Island lens was moved to the new lighthouse when it was built in 1869-70, and served until the lighthouse was decommissioned in 1978. This lens is complete with a working wind-up clockworks mechanism. In the picture to your left, you can see how the lens concentrates the light from the bulb within. Originally, whale oil was used to produce the light inside the lens. Additions and modifications to the Museum include:
